About Us
Who We Are
Pittwater Unleashed is a community organisation focused on responsible, shared beach access for families with dogs on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
Our approach is guided by the Triple-C Policy, which supports shared use of certain parts of certain beaches at certain times of day. This time-and-place framework balances enjoyment for different users while protecting the character of our beaches and the surrounding coastal environment.

Our History
Pittwater Unleashed was formally established in January 2014 in response to a long-standing community need for clearer, more constructive engagement between families with dogs and local government on coastal access.
That need became particularly evident following the closure of Careel Bay to dog swimming in May 2003 and the extended delay in identifying suitable, well-managed alternatives north of Bilgola Bends. Over time, what began as a local concern grew into a broader conversation about how shared coastal spaces could be planned and managed more effectively.
From the outset, Pittwater Unleashed has been a community-led organisation, sustained by local residents who care deeply about the Northern Beaches and how its public spaces are used. The group has evolved alongside changing council structures, policy frameworks and community expectations, maintaining a consistent focus on practical, workable solutions rather than short-term wins.
Over more than a decade, Pittwater Unleashed has engaged with Council, rangers, elected representatives and the wider community to support clearer rules, better design and more predictable access arrangements. This work has been powered by thousands of locals contributing their time, experience and goodwill – whether through attendance at consultations, participation in trials, sharing observations from the ground, or simply modelling responsible behaviour.
Today, Pittwater Unleashed continues as an independent community organisation with a strong local following, focused on stewardship rather than campaigning. The emphasis is on helping shared access arrangements function over time, in ways that respect environmental limits, community amenity and the diverse ways people enjoy the coast.
WHAT DRIVES US
Our Mission
Pittwater Unleashed exists to support responsible, shared use of coastal spaces by people with and without dogs.
We promote time- and place-specific access arrangements that enable coexistence, protect environmental values, and respect the experiences of all beach users.
.

SHared spaces, Shared respect
The Northern Beaches are our home. We believe community spaces are shared by people, dogs, families and nature alike. Respectful use of shared spaces builds trust, reduces conflict and supports stronger communities.

Responsible Ownership
Positive outcomes depend on responsible behaviour. Following rules, staying within boundaries, keeping dogs under effective control and cleaning up after them are essential to shared spaces working well.

Joy in Connection
Dogs bring joy, connection and wellbeing to our community. We value the role they play in family life, mental health and a sense of belonging.

CONSTRUCTIVE COLLABORATION
Durable solutions are built through partnership. We value open, respectful dialogue with Council, rangers and residents, because outcomes shaped together are more likely to endure.

evidence-based advocacy
Our work is guided by evidence, experience and practical observation. We support approaches that are fair, sustainable and designed to work in real-world conditions.
